Chris Childs (b. 1998) is an artist based in Bristol, UK, working primarily with animation and drawing. Their moving-image pieces are created using hand-drawn animation techniques, and display a keen interest in physical materials, such as paper and crayon.
Their work combines the aesthetics of industrially produced animation with non-linear and formalist structures, connecting their work to a lineage of experimental animators who have drawn inspiration from mass-produced cartoon imagery.
After studying animation in Bristol, they began creating a body of work comprised of non-linear and idiosyncratic short films. These animated works such as ‘Library of Paradise’ and ‘Bus Film’ often drew from the artist’s personal life, taking inspiration from the architecture of their childhood hometown to experiences of health issues and hospital visits.
These films were screened widely at events including London Short Film Festival, Encounters Film Festival, POFF Shorts, and B3 Biennial of the Moving Image.
In 2022, they were one of six artists selected for the FLAMIN Fellowship (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network). This signalled a shift in their practice towards creating animated works for gallery and installation contexts.
Since then, their work has been exhibited in venues including g39 Cardiff, Videotage Hong Kong, Close Up Film Centre London, and Public Works Gallery Chicago.
